"Fishing At It's Best", by Captain Matt Hoover 10/21/98
You couldnt ask for a better week to get out and do some fishing. The weather was absolutely perfect. The bait is coming in by the bushel. Everywhere you look, you can see the fish crashing and feeding. This is what we have been waiting for. Everybody that I have talked to has been doing well.
People have been asking me all week about the weeds that were blown in by the hurricane. There have been a few patches floating around, but they have not hindered fishing as far as I know. It definitely should not keep you off of the water if you have plans to go fishing.
Every day of this past week has been a command performance. There has been bait in just about every nook and cranny that you go to. There are shad, scaled sardines, threadfin herring, and finger mullet. Take your pick. All methods of fishing have been working well too. Live bait, artificial, and flies have all been taking fish.
There are a lot of snook being caught in the Marco and Ten Thousand Islands area. Most of the fish are small, but plenty of legal size snook are being boated too. Im not one to squabble about size. I like to have plenty of action. I have been getting good reports about the redfish. There are a lot of small redfish being caught too. We have been getting our fair share of legal size redfish as well. I have heard that there is a few large bull reds being caught also.
There have been tarpon of all sizes milling about. They have been in a feeding mode for sure. This is the time when they get fat for a long journey. They will gorge themselves on all the bait that is around. Look for them in the mouths of the passes on a low falling tide. They have also been spotted along the beaches. I know that I am going to have another whack at them before they depart. These fish are of a mind to hit anything that you offer them. They arent quite as picky now as they are in the spring. So you dont have to be as calculating on your method of catching them.
There has been good trout fishing as well. Most of the people that I know are catching them in the grass patches that you will find just outside of the front of the islands. Jigs are working just fine. A lot of people have been using the shrimp colored screw tails. I dont think the fish are being that picky right now. There have been some trout being caught that are of considerable size. I have seen some trout come to the dock that are over twenty inches. I think that we will be catching "gator" size trout in the future. That is something that our area has not seen in years.
This is one of the best times of the year to get out and wet a line. It is no longer too hot to enjoy yourself. The water temperature is perfect for every species that we like to fish for. Its time to take advantage of it before it gets too cool. I hope to see you out on the water.
